We make the 'NICE' restroom list :)

Shoppers share their choices for the best store bathrooms
Go to Freep article
You're fully caffeinated and winding your way through the mall, bags in hand, when ...

Darn that coffee!

Now you have to find a bathroom -- one that is clean, well stocked with soap and hand sanitizer and has a place for your bags other than the floor.

It should be easy to find a place to go, but, alas, not all mall and store bathrooms are as inviting as we might like -- shoppers in, shoppers out, all day long. In fact some restrooms are downright disgusting; I've left stores to go home and use my own toilet.

"I used to just hold it and not drink as much," says Katherine Chappelle, 36, of Bloomfield Township. Lately, however, she has started using shopper bathrooms -- Nordstrom at Twelve Oaks in Novi and Somerset Collection in Troy -- because she decided postponing the potty is bad for her health.

When Elizabeth Robbins, 26, of Dearborn Heights is in "unfamiliar territory" or a mall she doesn't think is all that great, she relies on the bathrooms at Macy's stores.

Rita Sitto, 23, of Shelby Township has to consider her shopping partner.

"I shop with my mom. ... My mom's diabetic. Diabetics always have to use the bathroom. My mom has no germ phobias or anything," says Sitto, an avid shopper. "I," she adds, "try to consider my best option."

So what are the best options?

I've been talking to shoppers (mostly women, because public bathrooms are especially difficult for female shoppers and in truth, women shop more than men). And in honor of today's official start of the holiday shopping season, I've compiled a list of potties that are devoid of the ick factor that surrounds so many public toilets.

In no particular order, here are some well-liked potties:

Neiman Marcus, Somerset Collection South, Troy. I know a man who leaves Somerset North and walks to Somerset South so he can use the Neiman Marcus restroom, it's just that posh. And rather than stalls with doors and walls that go halfway up to the ceiling, these have full-length doors and walls, making each stall its own little water closet.

Saks, Somerset Collection South, Troy. "I usually just go to the second floor. It's always clean. It's always empty," says Carol Ostrowski, a 50-ish shopper who lives in Plymouth. "I like restrooms when they're kind of back off the beaten path. You know there aren't going to be a lot of people heading for them. They're going to be cleaner."

Family restroom, Twelve Oaks Mall, Novi. Room for a stroller, kids and a parent. It has two separate toilets -- one adult-sized and one child-sized. "It's always clean. Last time we went at lunchtime, it looked like it'd just been cleaned. The seats were all still up, everything was still spotless," says Maria Mainero, a 38-year-old mother of two small children who lives in Farmington Hills.

Lord & Taylor, Lakeside Mall, Sterling Heights. "I try as much as possible to stay away from public bathrooms," says Sitto. But when she's shopping -- Lakeside is her usual destination -- she opts for the Lord & Taylor restrooms. "I will definitely do all I can to get there," she says. "I feel the more upscale the store is, the cleaner the bathroom might be. It might be a stereotype, but if the clothes are that expensive, the bathroom will be clean."

The Mall at Partridge Creek, Clinton Township. They're new, they're clean, and the women's bathrooms have a nice shelf for purses.

Home Goods and Target, everywhere. Reliable, clean enough and seldom short of toilet tissue.

Macy's, everywhere. Not the poshest in town, not the worst. They're nicely dependable.

Nordstrom, everywhere. A tough critic, Chappelle is a fan of the restrooms at Nordstrom at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi. (I can vouch for the women's restrooms at other Nordstrom stores.) Not only are they clean, "I'm an interior designer, so the space is nice. There's nice wall covering. There's a lounge with seating," Chappelle says.

Van Maur, Laurel Park Place, Livonia. Nice, clean, upscale. The ladies' lounge has comfy furniture and a phone for local calls.

Panera, Baja Fresh, Biggby Coffee. Rather than use a store's icky bathroom, Ostrowski says, "I'll leave and go to Panera. ... And I know fast food-wise, Baja Fresh always has very clean bathrooms." Other good bets: Starbucks and Biggby.

Somerset North and South, Troy. "They're all clean," says Trisha Geftos, who is 29 and lives in Riverview. "They have the hand dryers that are extremely fast, they're the super ones where ... they dry your hands in 5 or 6 seconds." Indeed, the bathrooms near the mall's Peacock Café food court are testing new state-of-the-art superfast hand dryers by Dyson.

Family restrooms, Southland Center, Taylor. Large enough to accommodate a stroller and a couple of kids and equipped with rocking chairs for nursing moms or anyone else who needs a break.

Tara Michener visits BIGGBY COFFEE!

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of the readers who stopped by Walden Books (Westland) on Saturday. Many customers bought more than one copy of "Who I am not what I am" at this signing. I am always touched when my book is added to readers book shelves and even more elated when it is given as a gift to someone. This holiday season readers and their families have the chance to see me at Biggby Coffee, Northville (8 Mile/Haggerty) on Sunday Novewmber 30th! This will be a fun event complete with a 1 page story contest, coloring sheets, storytime, discounted cocoa, and more! I hope to see you there! Have a great day and remember that I am always thankful for you....my readers!

Pipe Dreams

So I was at several conferences and speaking engagements last week, and at one of the conferences on entrepreneurial communities a woman stood up and asked me "why do we want to fill all of our young children with Pipe Dreams?"

This really sorta bristled me, I mean kids all seem to have that entrepreneurial spirit (have you ever seen a 3 year old fearlessly explore their world?)...and then slowly we take it out of them, and in it's place we fill them with rules, expectations, and fears.

Part of the entrepreneurial spirit is wrapped up in the idea of doing something you love, another part is doing something that unleashes something creative in you, that nobody else might understand. It takes a lot of faith, confidence, and courage to do that something...ya'know?

I was a keynote for a Junior Achievement fundraiser, an organization I love. There I had a chance to speak about a few Pipe Dreams in a sixth grade class...that without prompting, without encouragement....started 7 different business's (all listed in the end of the video)

No Fear, it's the only way I can explain it :)

Aaron Marley...and not Bob

Just another sumthin' that the folks at BIGGBY do :)

Rollings Middle School of the Arts is pleased to announce BIGGBY COFFEE, located at 717 Trolley Road, as a new Business Partner. BIGGBY COFFEE is displaying RMSA’s visual art students’ work for a three week period.

For each regularly priced item purchased, customers are given one vote. For each “vote” - BIGGBY COFFEE donates $1 to RMSA’s Visual Art Department. BIGGBY COFFEE provides the winners, each week, with art supplies that these students can then utilize in the classroom.

The excitement of this display was heightened when Principal Elena Furnari served the customers as the GUEST BARISTA on October 28th. RMSA had a great turnout – bringing lots of new customers to BIGGBY COFFEE and lots of votes. BIGGBY COFFEE graciously contributed $138 from sales of week one’s display to RMSA’s visual art department. Future guest barista’s include Vice-Principal Camilla Pinckney on 11/06, and Art Teachers Meg Skow & Kevin Morrisey on 11/11. RMSA is fortunate to be working with owner, Aaron Marley of BIGGBY COFFEE, and thank him for allowing them to display students’ work and sharing their art with the community.

B-On Time

I had such a great time at Emily B's store..she is awesome and her staff is too!

Now unfortunately I came late...I hit a bank of snow in Ionia that slowed me down. I was feelin' a little sheepish because people were waitin' for me...and they had places to go...some came back later to see me anyway...I love GR!

Anyway, I met Brandon, and he had something for me that would be perfect for all the stores...It's creative, it's BIGGBY, and it's all about the BIGGBY Way. Thanks Brandon! ..and good luck on that avocado farm :)

And in the end, it was so appropriate to get this on the day that I was late!

Brian the Serious :]

Brian has been a good friend to BIGGBY COFFEE for a long time, and he always generously shows up where ever I am (in Grand Rapids)...I asked him about the BIGGBY WAY...and it took him a while (he was talkin' all that corporate stuff ya'know?) but he closes with BIGGBY WAY = Fun.....thanks Brian :)

Colleen...she is my Jared :)

Colleen...was such a good sport and I appreciate her taking a moment...I was so excited to film her that I forgot to check my batteries and they ran out suddenly. So if it seems that the video ends abruptly...I just ran out of juice, ya'know?

....and if you don't get it, neither do I :)

Speaking at Walsh College...Nov 18th Tomorrow:)

TheInvite

Come see me speak at Walsh...the lunch sounds awesome and I hear the speaker won't be bad either :) If your last minute call or pay at the door...

Where's Bob? You'll find him on Twitter; Facebook, and LinkedIn, but on November 18, you'll find Biggby Coffee CEO Bob Fish at the Walsh College Novi Campus. Fish is the Business Leadership Institute Michigan Business Success Story speaker, and Walsh Trustee Michael Semanco, president Hennessey Capital, will give the welcome remarks. Lunch will begin at 11:30 and tickets are $15 for students, $30 for alumni and partners and $60 for all others. Order tickets online here. Fish will describe Biggby's unique marketing and customer service strategies including his use of Web 2.0 tools like Facebook and Twitter, You Tube and Flickr. Read more about Biggby Coffee here: also on Gen18 and this Blog. Here's Bob's Blog, and his Biggby Lounge.

Fish is the ninth speaker in Walsh’s “Michigan Business Success Story” series. All of the companies featured in the series have modeled business principles taught in Walsh College classrooms.

“Biggby’s standard of customer service is high above its competitors, and even above most franchise retailers,” said BLI Director Michael Levens, Ph.D., Walsh College associate professor of Marketing and chair of Undergraduate Business Administration. “Bob’s engagement of customers and employees on social media networks is far ahead of just about everyone over the age of 30,” Dr. Levens added. “This company is a great example of having all the pieces in place for success – they live and breathe their business values.”

The company’s name change last year from Beaner’s to Biggby is another testament to living its corporate values. Although the change went off without much fanfare, its rationale was honored by the National Restaurant Association. Biggby Coffee is a finalist for the group’s 2008 Faces of Diversity Inspiration Award. Biggby Coffee opened the first cafe in March, 1995 and began franchising in 1999. Today there are 100 cafes in nine states.

David Johnson...

...freelance Photographer extraordinaire for Entrepreneur Magazine. It took about 4 hours for this photo shoot at the Waterford MI BIGGBY COFFEE, but I swear it was only 15 minutes. We had a great time and it just wouldn't have been the same without Kari and the gang...they were a big help. I am sworn to secrecy about the picture...it was unusual to say the least, but I wouldn't have had it any other way, ya'know? I have some great footage of the picture being shot...and I can reveal it in about a month r'so...until then meet the photographer David he takes pictures...he'll make you smile :)

BTW--I'm a dork, I left the camera on...so after I say "see'ya" to David the video is over...unless your just some voyeur type :)

PS although there is one clue in the aftermath...other than that we're just killin' time...as David sketches out the picture.

Biggby Coffee Hosts United Way Event

November 14, 2008 - 5:18PM
Employee's at mid-Michigan Biggby Coffee locations are brewing up support for Capital Area's United Way.

Starting Friday, Nov. 14, Biggby customers can pick up brochures with information about Capital Area United Way and how to donate time and money.

Jason Mankey, a Biggby manager said, "We're here to raise awareness for the United Way. We've been passing out fliers and pamphlets, telling people how they can get involved locally, or how they can give money if they don't have time to be involved."

For more information on donating to the Capital Area United Way, visit www.capitalareaunitedway.org.

Hanging out at BIGGBY COFFEE

If there was only one...that would be enough :)

I have the opportunity to speak at various Universities and such about 20 times a year.

I almost always accept an invitation (although, I might have to slow down a little) because I was an uninspired student that just wanted to go out into the real world and get'er done :)

My hope in any speaking engagement is to touch those that have dreams but still have questions...I want to give permission to 'take risk' and follow that which calls to them.

If there was only one person, that got it, that would be enough...below is a communications from a professor, just this morning...

Dear Bob,

E mail is a wonderful thing...I can write you and not worry about waking you up. I am writing you at this ungodly hour because I am reading a set of papers from my students and just have to tell you what a great and positive influence you have had on my students. So many of your ideas from your talk are reflected in their papers and the realization that these ideas can be applied to all kinds of retail operations. THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN COFFEE AND IN RETAIL EDUCATION.

Until Next Time!
Steve Flaster

and this from a student...just this Thursday...
Bob,

I really enjoyed the presentation! I've aways wanted to start my own business, so having your story really gives me hope that I will one day achieve my own personal success.

Drop your Pants

Occasionally I come across something in my travels that just strikes me as funny...

The Posse in Owosso

Tori and the crew were absolutely awesome...everybody knows them, they know everybody...It couldn't have been better.

I met so many people, like Chuck (were already friends on Facebook), and I had a chance to interview Emma (see the video below this one). I had some folks come from the Bloomfield area and I had a fellow 'tweeter' come to do an interview of me for his blog.

Met a dj, and a pastor, and a car dealership owner, and the pet supplies plus gals, and the subway folks, moms, and families, ....it just never stopped! I loved every minute of it! Yowzaa...!

oompa loompa found in Owosso

Blue Ocean Purple Cow

I woke up this morning to get ready to go to Owosso (spot bob...remember I buy!), anyway I jumped on the computer to check emails and such and Lorri wrote me a message on Facebook that struck me. I not sure why it did...except that it was very forward, which I always like :), and it felt very honest (thank you :)).

The note is below and there is some good advice and observations, things that we have been watching for sometime...but the close is what got to me...'don't go the way of Starbucks' (she said it, not me)...I so appreciate this statement, and Lorri as long as the people that started BIGGBY COFFEE are around...It'll never happen, ya'know?

We got our own thing goin' on and we and we love it! As a matter of fact we think the other folks (as massively successful as they have been) lately are getting things wrong left and right...You see, we think they could use a little help in learning the BIGGBY way:) So we have been considering a hostile take-over one share at a time...whad'ya think? It might be the only way!

At your store on Cedar at a business meeting that the number of cars that came through the drivethrough between 8:15 and 9:15 a.m. was incredible. Even more notable was the percentage of women (and multiple women in one vehicle). Of the 34 cars that came through, only 2 (that's right -- 2!) were men. This screams of marketing to women. Women love to be pampered and drink your delicious coffee drinks.

I also noticed that the Coffee and a Car Wash sign had your old name(:

I dig traffic studies ... and real data. And, I really dig Blue Oceans and Purple Cows. Please, please do not go the way of Starbucks!

Warmest regards,
Lorri .. on the Edge.

What is this Blue Ocean Purple CowThe name was inspired by a merger of two of our favorite 21st century paradigms - Blue Ocean and Purple Cow. Blue Ocean is a strategy that dares companies to liberate themselves from the traditional models of competition by creating new market spaces. Instead of fighting for existing (and often shrinking) demand, Blue Ocean strategy is about creating a new category altogether. Purple Cow on the other hand advocates transformation to the phenomenal, exciting, and flat out unbelievable, like a purple cow amidst a sea of brown cows.

a message from Menachem Kniespeck

go there and find out more :)

Bob:

I wanted to take a moment out of my schedule to specifically let you know of the incredible charitable work Joe and Rose Glendinning are doing for our organization from within their Biggby store. We initially approached them to possibly donate "something" for a silent auction. After a couple of discussions, their store became a drop off location for our Winter Wear & School Supply Drive, had special coupons created and even went the 'extra mile' to have Ewards sent to their mailing list (offering a discount for a donation).

Already excited about our organization's mission, Rose has already started talking about some Spring events.

We are happy to have supporters like Rose and Joe, and I wanted you to know so that you could 'B' happy about two of your franchisees.

Regards,

Menachem

Store 241 find it!

In search of the BIGGBY WAY?

So I'm sittin' here gettin' reports from the office and I notice that BIGGBY COFFEE is up again for yesterday(+8.7% same store sales) and (+5.3% cup count)....course all this is a little internal jargon for more people are comin' to BIGGBY COFFEE than ever!

This in spite of the fact that the Michigan economy has been in a virtual recession since 2001...and clearly the National economy is in a tailspin too.

Now, I know a lot of business people...and yet I don't know anyone that can report this kinda' customer loyalty, I also know a lot of people in the Foodservice business, and they they aren't talkin' about people knockin' their doors down either, and even the big hitters in the Coffee Industry are reporting that things are way down...What's up with that?

Why could BIGGBY COFFEE be growing? What is it?

Hard to say...but I do know that,
We do have the best and most loyal customers in the world, and
We do have the best staff in the world, and
We do have the best operators in the world, and
We all work hard every day...
Maybe it's just the BIGGBY WAY :)

But if so, what is this elusive thing, called the 'BIGGBY WAY'?

News Story in today's Weekly Choice...

Nick an uber-franchisee

Can you believe it...I'm sitting in Gaylord and this news story unfolds!

See the full story

On a recent weekday autumn morning at Biggby Coffee in Gaylord, a woman sat quietly working on her notebook computer while sipping a latte, a family with young children excitedly planned their day while enjoying a variety of specialty drinks, meanwhile a scattering of planned and impromptu business meetings took place over coffee at several tables. Bistro, Café, Expresso Bar or just plain old Coffee Shop, by any description Biggby Coffee is a wonderful “take a break” establishment offering scrumptious beverages, WiFi accessability, and a cozy, comfortable ambience that is quickly becoming THE gathering spot for people of all ages and walks of life.

Biggby Coffee offers the perfect blend of atmosphere, convenience and perhaps best of all, fantastic selection of caffeinated, decaffeinated, steaming hot, freezing cold, yet always tasty beverages.

The phenomenal growth of the company is an indication of the satisfaction their customers enjoy. Founded by Fish and Mary Roszel, the enterprising couple opened the doors of their first store in East Lansing, Michigan on March 15th, 1995. Today, Biggby Coffee (formerly known as Beaner’s), has over 100 locations in nine states throughout the Midwest and Southeast.

With a prime Gaylord location at the intersection of I-75 and M-32, Biggby Coffee has enjoyed tremendous success since Nick Spadafore and his wife Chanin opened their establishment back in June of 2007. The couple has inspired a refreshing spirit of enthusiasm and top-notch customer service among the outstanding staff at Biggby, creating an atmosphere that is as fun to work in as it is to frequent for their customers.

Nick states, “We have had a great staff since day one. Chanin has been very supportive in helping set up the business and she continues to work with the staff and takes care of our accounts payable each week. I greatly appreciate everyone’s hard work every day.”

Biggby Coffee has consistently lent their support, and often free coffee, to community events and activities around Gaylord. A recent example is the “Young Artists’ Mural” program spearheaded by South Maple Elementary art teacher Chantal Fennell. Third grade students created an original art work which is being displayed at Biggby on Wednesday, November 5th and Sunday, November 9th from noon until 2 pm. During those times, Mrs. Fennell will be guest barista, and $1 for each beverage sold will be donated to the art department.

While many of the beverages sold will be selected from the several blends of coffee brewed from beans the proprietors of Biggy Coffee have meticulously search the world for, the menu also includes an incredible array of specialty drinks (made with or without coffee) including Crème Freezes in several fruit flavors, chilled Mochas, Lattes, Cappuccinos, Espressos, Teas and a seasonal favorite, Hot Carmel Cider.

Biggby Coffee is open 6am to 10pm Monday through Saturday, and 7am to 10pm on Sundays. Stop in or drive-thru and try a tasty cup!

Voting--Odds and Ends!

A few things posted out on the blogosphere :)

Hannah and I participated in the democratic process this morning, hopefully you've all done the same. Thankfully, I picked the right time to head to the polls. I didn't have to wait in any sort of line, which was great. I happily took my "I Voted" sticker and went to Biggby, where I was given a discount on my latte. I know I could have gone to Starbucks and received free coffee, but since Biggby was on my way home, it made more sense.
GO TO Ready or Not

I get email coupons from Biggby. Many of you know I do not drink coffee. I get the coupons for My Hubby, but I do enjoy their hot chocolate. Most of all I get the emails for what Bob has to say. He always has a story or interesting fact's with the coupons. This is the one I received yesterday and thought it was worth sharing.

Election Day History

Alright, every Election Day makes history, but I thought these were worth sharing.
I owe thanks to Biggby Coffee & their e-mails to me for this info. ;)

So OK, not everybody has to try to combine Halloween with Voting...but think how much more exciting it would be :)

Anyway please VOTE ....it's without a doubt, one of the most important things you can do.

Sure, sometimes it feels like just one more vote wouldn't matter...but I guess the way I look at it is, without you in the process...makin' choices, it's just not the same, cuz' it makes me think you don't believe in the system...that somehow you think it's broke....and really it's not, if your there, ya'know?

Get a little red, white, and U....when yer done click here!

Oh...do you think that woman is dressed as a Mocha Mocha or a Caramel Mocha?
