Captain Kirk discovers Hippies in Grand Rapids

So I go to visit Emily in Grand Rapids...a super fine store there on Fuller. I find Kirk workin' behind the counter...he has some ideas for me 'as the CEO' of the Company. It involves all this short, tall, grande language we use in the coffee shop business (he think we should call it small, medium, and large...like everybody else in America :) ) Anyway watch the video and tell me what you think!

so this whole short,tall,grande

small,medium,large stuff...

couple of things come to mind to me...you probably already thought of, but might as well give my thoughts. Small meduim large makes us sound too much like McDonalds, Speedway, QD, etc. I like that short tall grande sets us apart and makes us seem higher quality. Is kinda like the sauces (Carmel Marvel Sauce, Mocha Mocha Sauce, etc). It is a signature of Biggby Coffee. Nobody else has short, tall, grande! :)

The main reason I don't like short, tall, grande, and trente is because of Starbucks. I kind of feel like we just ripped off of their sizes, I think they uses tall, grande, and venti. Also, I think a lot of customers just wish it was simpler. They usually order by saying how many fluid ounces they want, or saying small, medium and large.

Maybe we should come up with something that sets us apart from Starbucks and McDonald's!

I understand that customers order in fluid ouces. I don't know what starbucks does...I think we should be different from them. One thing about how customers order...all of our regulars know how to order a drink. Why? Because they learn it when we all it out after making the drink. That helps to train the customers on how to properly order their beverage. But I still see your point on customers ordering by ounces...usually my non-regualars or just the people who don't pay attention to detail. :)

Kirk--nice working fencing with Bob--you kept up for sure (I should be careful though, with such assertions...Bob's competitive--you might find yourself in a coffee-chug type situation).

And yeah, the Short, Tall, Grande business as it relates to both Starbucks and Panera makes it a bit tricky when training new baristas and new customers...especially because the Tall is their "small."

I'm for losing the shared terminology, but get the point about CS/GS coffee, though I would say that's an awfully small distinction, and also, nothing wrong with allying ourselves in small, non-beverage-related ways with the pinkie-finger-down coffee world either.

Now, Steph and I floated some fun, alternate suggestions, but Tom shot them down, guns blazing...rough rough rough. Tom's a murderer of fun. ;) -JD
